2/10/2008 Fire District Budget

Please note that the Fire District #7 Elections are being held on Saturday, February 16, between 2:00 pm and 9:00 pm. You will be asked to vote on the 2008 budget, along with a referendum for raising the tax rate. We at the Nottingham Volunteer Fire Company support this budget and referendum, and urge your support in passing it. While it does represent an increase in our tax rate, we feel that there are clear and convincing reasons for this. Here are some of them:

For the past 3 years the tax rate has remained the same ($0.16 per $100.00 assessed value).

The Fire Commission has worked hard to keep costs in check. Yet during this time they faced several financial pressures. These include the addition of staff to get the first responding truck immediately on the road on a 24/7 basis. They also had to replace both the tower ladder and one of the engines, while facing and a steady increase in calls.

Last year they used $150,000.00 of unreserved funds and $75,000.00 from the sale of an asset (old fire engine) to keep the tax rate the same. There aren't any remaining unreserved funds available for use in 2008 and also no assets to sell off, so they now have to make up $225,000.00. In year 2007 they had a water bill of $260,000.00 and it was increased to $300,000.00 for 2008 (The water bill is for all of the hydrants and water mains in our district.)

This comes to around $265,000.00. This is the amount we need to raise the tax for year 2008. A house valued at $300,000 (assessed at $150,000.00) will pay $45.00 more per year $0.03 per $100.00 more in assessed value).

Remember the tax remained the same for the last 3 years so in 4 years the average tax increase is $11.25 per year for our fire protection.

2/10/2008 Fire Commissioner Election, Charles Belmont

As noted below, the Fire District #7 Elections are being held on Saturday, February 16, between 2:00 pm and 9:00 pm. You will be asked to vote for the one open Fire Commissioner Position. We at the Nottingham Volunteer Fire Company ask that you support Commissioner Charles Belmont as he seeks re-election to this seat.

Commissioner Belmont has tirelessly supported the Fire Company for the past 34 years, and has dedicated his time in several administrative and fire ground functions. He currently is both an active Life Member of the Volunteer Fire Company and a Commissioner with Fire District #7. He has exploited this experience in his position as Fire Commissioner, and has been instrumental in shaping the Fire District as it faces changing needs.
